Toshiba is an important member of the world's chip manufacturers. In the 1980s, Toshiba and NEC were the world's two largest semiconductor manufacturers. Toshiba has been one of the top 5 chip manufacturers in the world since the 1990s. In 2008, Toshiba ranked third, only behind Intel and Samsung, but ahead of Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics. By 2011, Toshiba's business in China had been carried out for 38 years, and its determination and efforts to "develop together with China" remained unchanged. Toshiba's digital products, electronic devices and components, social infrastructure, and home appliances businesses are all operating in China. In 1995, Toshiba (China) Co., Ltd. was established to strengthen Toshiba's comprehensive management and strategic planning functions for enterprises in China. As of 2011, Toshiba has established 64 joint ventures and wholly-owned companies in China, with a total investment of over 8 billion RMB and approximately 23000 employees. In 2005, the business scale (sales in China+exports to China) was approximately 57 billion RMB.

Toshiba's global market, excluding Japan, is divided into four major regions: Europe, America, Asia, and China. China is the only market based on countries and also Toshiba's largest independent market after Japan and the United States. The product range includes Toshiba's entire product line, and the business model involves various businesses such as research and development, procurement, production, logistics, sales, service, and environmental protection. For Toshiba, the United States had the largest overseas market share in 2003, with China ranking first, accounting for about 20%. By 2008, Toshiba's business scale in China will be on par with or even exceed that of the United States. China has undoubtedly become an important pillar of Toshiba's global business.
